Final Renders and Evaluation of Project

Having had a chance to evaluate the outcome of this project I believe that it has been a major success. I went from staring blindly at Maya and its interface, to creating a three dimensional character within the space of a single semester. During the first few weeks I found this project particularly difficult, as it was very apparent that Maya's interface was not particularly intuitive for novices like myself, which I was at that time. As it hosts so many different tools it took a lot of time to even discover how some of these worked, as many are not advertised, and some are not even included in the Student version of Maya. I am feel however, that I am able to use Maya with ease and a certain degree of confidence. In addition I believe that it would be worthwhile addition to my skills to learn other 3D programs, such as Cinema 4D, and Blender, along with other tools such as zBrush, I am positive that having the ability to use more than one 3D software program, would open up my work opportunities. The new skills that I have acquired during this project have also allowed me to take my model to the next level and I am very happy with the outcome of my final model

If I were to repeat this project again I would tackle things differently and in different orders for certain. As a result of what I learnt I would definitely have modelled the hair in a different way, as while my model’s hair looks fine in my renders, and I am happy with how it came out, I feel that if it were imported into a movie or an interactive game, parts of the hair may not always stay attached to the body. The same goes towards the mouth bag, I feel that the inside of the mouth was the biggest let down of the model, and if I were to redo it then, when building the head, I would try to incorporate the mouth bag into the design of the character, whilst building the basics of the head, and not have it as an afterthought as which is what happened this time around.

Besides the Mouth Bag, the other major drawback in my project was my lack of organisation. Although I managed to keep my files in order I had a tendency to forget to delete construction history, which resulted in lots and lots of duplicate objects, which increased my model’s file size considerably. As a result this meant my model would take longer to load and render, which would not be acceptable in a professional environment. In addition to this, I did a very poor job at labelling parts of the model, and while this may have been acceptable when being the sole person working on the model this would not work in a professional environment. If I had sent my model to someone they would have no idea where anything was, and once again this would be unacceptable in a workplace, as it would dramatically slow down the creation process. In the future I will make sure to make efforts to correct my weaknesses that could affect my employability.

Overall, I feel that this module has been a huge success, and has definitely improved my chances of getting jobs in the future.
