Week 8 - Head Modelling

This week i began modelling the head, to many arguably the hardest part of the human body, during this process, i followed a YouTube tutorial (Listed below) which was merely a speed build was very helpful in creating a model head to my specifications. I looked at the Lynda.com tutorial for building characters, and much like the boy tutorial, while some areas were informative, The style of head had deviated so far from what my character is. Despite what i was told, i actually really enjoyed the head build so far. it was fun to see how the model is finally coming together.
To begin, i created a circle and added subdivisions in height and length. I flattened the sides of the heads, and then using the edge tool dragged the vertices down to create an incredibly basic head shape. I then added edge loops down the front of thew face (currently a flat surface), with more lines to work with, i extruded a nose and pushed some edges back to create the cavities of the eyes. i then created two new circle polygons to act as the eyes, and lined them up with my T-Pose.

I Continued adding detail to the face, i added the lips and subdivided the noes to round it off. once i was happy with how it was going, i cut a hole in the bottom of the head and extruded down, creating the neck, i made sure to follow close photo reference during this time, so that the neck didn't just become a sausage out the bottom of the neck, i made sure to include things such as an hourglass shape and tried to subtly include an adams apple.

Now that the head was attached to the rest of the body, i continued to round of the face, in conjunction with my T-pose reference. I then began to work of creating the eyes, so i cut out the area where the eyes will be, i then used the edge loop tool, to create definition around the eyes, such as the idea of eyelids, as well as forming the brow to look more natural.

Once the basics of the eyes were done, i went back into the nose and mouth in much greater detail, again following photo reference, as well as my T-pose to create lips and a nose that while looking real and believable, matched the stylised nature of my character.

Once i was suitably happy with how my model was progressing, i went back and re-added the eyes to the eye cavities and modelled the to fit the eyes, i have to make some deviations from my T-pose, as my drawings while looking ok on paper, gave a very wide eye and bug like look to the character, unhappy with this, i made the eyes slightly smaller and slightly closer together, which looked much better

Overall, i am really happy with my progress this week, and  i'm really excited to see how the model comes together in the next few weeks. Upon reflection, i wish i had tackled this part of the model earlier, while i got lucky and found the build os far relatively easy, i have procrastinated in previous weeks, therefore preventing me from taking more time to perfect more parts of the model. I still feel highly motivated with this module and have taken steps to improve my workflow, with hopefully is apparent in this weeks work. i hope to continue this level of work in the coming weeks and have the model finished by Christmas.

My hopes for next week are to create the inner workings of the mouth, finish the face, and begin working on the Ear. I also want to clean up my model and make it look more presentable, as while it is still a Work in Progress, i am a messy worker and this has spilled over into my model, with lots of  poor organisation. This is not something that is acceptable in the industry therefore i want to remove it from my work as well.
